Saliva Collector

During the Covid pandemic, MolGen B.V. started a new project to enable large scale, non-intrusive and accurate Covid testing. This would be done by collecting saliva in a tube, extracting DNA from the sample and performing a PCR test to see if the virus is present. This project is called Megaprep.

The saliva needs to be transported in an agressive liquid. The challenge is let the saliva mix with the liquid, while avoiding contact between the user and the liquid.

Saliva is deposited in the funnel while the buffer is sealed.

Sample rests in the upper chamber

User removes the funnel, allowing the sample to drop

Funnel is discarded while the sample mixes with the buffer

User closes the tube with a cap and sends the sample off

For this project I made 3D models, marketing material (renders) and technical drawings for injection moulding. The moulds have been manufactured and the saliva collector has been in production. This system is patented under number: EP4230149A1.
